Romney AD- Not Even Half

Governor Nikki Haley Speaks Out on the Ethics case

It should be noted that House Speaker Bobby Harrell is one of the many incumbents who filed for reelection. He was late in filing his Statement of Economic Interest but Never mind- all he had to do was pay a small fine and he was certified to be on the ballot. So goes politics in South Carolina. Truly appalling and we need new faces in Columbia. Term limits would help!

The following link leads to an interesting article on the current elections in Egypt. Some of the quotes remind me of our own elections.

Letter regarding Election Fiasco

The Aiken Standard published my letter concerning the SC Primary Election Fiasco today but due to an error on my part they published a version that I intended to replace with a correction concerning the requirements for incumbents. The corrected version appears below:

"Letter to the Editor

The Aiken Standard editorial concerning the current SC primary election fiasco is understandable since it has been accepted as correct by most incumbents .However I believe that we should have some reservations. In the first place the public needs to be informed that the entire problem was created by one outrageously arrogant and infamous long term Senator. He realized that he was in serious danger of being defeated a by a woman challenger so he found a way to “take her out”. It is noteworthy that the legislature appointed Supreme Court limited its finding to one clause of an incredibly complex and confusing set of laws. There are requirements for incumbents as well as challengers and it is not clear that all of the incumbents currently certified by the parties actually followed them. For instance did the incumbent actually file required electronic economic Interests report by April 15? Beneath the surface there were big differences between the earlier Ethics Commission findings of who was in and who was out and the non-transparent findings of the two parties and the legislators. Some serious investigative reporting would be useful. Democrats and Republicans alike would benefit from a non-partisan exposure of the incumbent forever legislature. The following link to an excellent investigative website will give everyone a better insight into this very complicated problem. http://garnetspy.com/2012/05/08/the-south-carolina-con/#comment-6882 "

Primary Election Fiasco SC Style

The following appears today on District 81 candidate Jane Vaughter's website

"I am sure you are all aware of the questions raised in the last week over eligibility of some 200 candidates including myself to appear on the June 12 primary ballot. My campaign has been in touch with legislators in both the state house and senate, and apparently, there are several efforts underway to find a solution to this problem. However, even if these fail, the options for a write-in or petition candidacy exist. Therefore, I want to let you know that at this point, I remain committed to run for the State House. The recent news confirms how important it is that we elect someone who will contest, not join, the Columbia establishment that works to protect their own interests over those of the voters. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions."

I have learned from Senator Ryberg that there will be an emergency meeting of the Judiciary Committee at 10:00 am this coming Tuesday May 8th. Representative Tom Young also informs the House will take up the matter on Tuesday.Readers are encouraged to attend the meetings. A large crowd may help our politicians decide. Let us hope they do the right thing.
